Who Speaks in the Text? A Comparative Study of Authorship and Authenticity in Shakespeare

In her 2025 book, Erminia Passannanti argues that the Shakespeare–de Vere debate is a clear example of how accepted biographies can be more fragile than they seem. Recent debates about who wrote certain literary works highlight an ongoing conflict between traditional historical methods and stricter standards of evidence. When we apply careful standards—such as evaluating evidence, questioning the reliability of sources, and examining how historical claims are justified—the traditional view that William Shakespeare of Stratford wrote the plays begins to show weaknesses.

Such weaknesses come from gaps in the historical record, assumptions that lack solid proof, and stories about Shakespeare’s life that were pieced together after the fact to form a coherent narrative. In other words, a widely accepted account may have endured more because of tradition than because of strong evidence.
