The SOF is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. Should we ask you to provide certain information by which you can be identified when using the SOF website or by any other means, then you can be assured that it will only be used in accordance with this privacy statement.

The SOF may change this policy from time to time by updating this page. You should check this page from time to time to ensure that you are happy with any changes. This policy is effective from May 1, 2018.

What we collect

We may collect the following information:

What we do with the information we gather

We are the sole owners of the information collected on this site and by other means. We only have access to/collect information that you voluntarily give us via email or other direct contact from you. We will not sell, rent, or reveal this information to anyone unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so.

We will use your information to respond to you, regarding the reason you contacted us. We will not share your information with any third party outside of our organization, other than as necessary to fulfill your request, e.g., to ship an order.

We require this information to understand your needs and provide you with a better service, and in particular for the following reasons:

  • Internal record keeping.
  • We may use the information to improve our products and services.

Security

We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure, we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

Your Financial Information

Financial transactions that you make directly through the SOF website using a credit card, debit card, or PayPal, such as becoming a member or renewing your membership, registering for a conference, making a donation to the research grant program or to the SOF general fund, are handled securely through PayPal (even the credit and debit card transactions), which means that the SOF never has access to, and never stores, credit or debit card numbers used in your online transactions. The SOF does not retain any financial information you send us by any other means, such as postal mail, once the information has been used to complete the intended transaction.

SOF-related transactions that you complete through third parties, however, such as books and journals sold through Amazon; SOF T-shirts, mugs, tote bags, water bottles, and hoodies sold through Zazzle; hotel and travel reservations for SOF conferences, etc., are not under the SOF’s control. You should consult the privacy statements applicable to the websites in question.

SOF Social Media

Generally, comments, “likes,” and other expressions of opinion that you make on the SOF’s social media pages, such as the SOF’s Facebook page, Twitter page, YouTube channel, Instagram page, Tumblr page, Google Plus page, etc., are immediately accessible by the general public and therefore you should have no expectation of privacy in such expressions. Usually, you may edit or delete such expressions on your own if you should decide to do so. If you wish to communicate privately to the SOF, use email or postal mail (P.O. Box 66083, Auburndale, MA 02466).

How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyze web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyze data about webpage traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you, however, from taking full advantage of the website.
