Exploring the evidence that the works of Shakespeare were written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford

Richard Waugaman talks Henry VIII and Falstaff in “The SOF Interviews”

Richard Waugaman
Dr. Richard Waugaman joins us to discuss parallels between Henry VIII and Falstaff.

Dr. Richard Waugaman joins SOF President Bob Meyers for the second installment of “The SOF Interviews,” our new video series of informal talks with Oxfordians. Waugaman, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University and 2021 Oxfordian of the Year, discusses the weight gain and personality change of Henry VIII following a jousting accident and how personality changes may show up in the character of Falstaff. Waugaman wrote about this theory in his article “Is Falstaff a Portrait of the Historical Henry VIII?,” published in volume 22 of The Oxfordian in 2020.

This lively conversation considers Queen Elizabeth as Shakespeare’s chief audience member and ponders how she may have viewed her father. There is even a fascinating peek into the practice of psychotherapy.
