William Kent

William Kent (1884-1963) was an historian of London who wrote, amongst other books, London Worthies, 1939.  He was also a prolific contributor to the Shakespeare Fellowship News-Letter, published by the U.K.-based organization that was a progenitor of the SOF.

On page 7 of this 1950 publication you can read Kent’s outraged reaction to a BBC talk:  “Literary historians are almost invariably professors, and a professor can no more disavow belief in the God of Stratford than an Anglican clergyman can accept the rule of the Holy Father.  It is wisest to ignore what you cannot answer.”

Not much has changed in 74 years, one could argue…
