Nothing Is Truer Than Truth, the documentary film on Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, the likely author behind the pseudonym “Shakespeare,” premieres this week on the subscription film and television service Hulu, best known for its award-winning original series The Handmaid’s Tale. Beginning August 30, the documentary will also be available on Amazon Prime for free streaming and download for all Prime members. The film is produced and directed by former SOF Trustee Cheryl Eagan-Donovan.
The Hulu premiere will allow over 28 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to view the film and represents a major broadcast release of the de Vere biopic. The Amazon Prime release will connect the film with an audience of over 100 million viewers. Viewers can rate and review the film on Amazon, which directly impacts reach and visibility. Director Eagan-Donovan explains: “We hope that even those who have previously seen the film will view the entire film again, rate it, and share with friends and colleagues.”
Nothing Is Truer Than Truth follows Edward de Vere as he travels to Venice and throughout Italy in 1575–76, discovers commedia dell’arte, and collects the experiences that would become identified with the works of Shakespeare. The film explores the role of de Vere’s bisexuality as a reason for the pseudonym “Shakespeare.”
Filmed in Venice, Verona, Mantua, Padua, and Brenta, Italy, at sites visited by De Vere and the settings for The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and Two Gentlemen of Verona, the film features award-winning actors and directors Sir Derek Jacobi, Sir Mark Rylance, Diane Paulus, and Tina Packer.
The film received a large-scale media release in February of this year. You can view the 4-minute trailer here:
